The Rise of Cooper Flagg

If you know anything about basketball, you’d know that Cooper Flagg has taken the NBA by storm. The combination of his ability to play multiple positions and his high basketball IQ, combined with his large frame, makes him a beast on both ends of the court.

Buoyed by his one-of-a-kind ability, Cooper’s journey to the professional league has been nothing but extraordinary and mind-blowing. Cooper Flagg was born in the small town of Newport, located in Maine. From a young age, his life revolved around the sport of basketball. He played other sports, such as soccer and baseball, but basketball was the only sport that truly stuck with him.

Cooper attended Nokomis Regional High School, where he was considered one of the best in the state. In a short time, he established himself as arguably one of the best players in his class in the entire country as he began to gain popularity and traction around the US. During his freshman year, however, Flagg realized that he needed to take his game to the next level if he wanted to play basketball at the collegiate and professional level. He pursued this goal by leaving his own state of Maine and transferring to Montverde Academy in Florida, where he hoped to find more challenging competition. At that point, Montverde Academy had already established itself as a high school powerhouse, producing some of the biggest names in basketball, like Scottie Barnes, Cade Cunningham, RJ Barrett, and D’Angelo Russell. To prove that he was ready for an even higher level of competition, Flagg also decided to reclass from 2025 to 2024. At Monteverde Academy, Cooper Flagg dominated, winning the Gatorade National Player of the Year and becoming the number one recruit in his class.

And his story didn’t end there. In the summer of 2024, Cooper Flagg had the opportunity to join Team USA’s training camp, where he showcased his pure basketball skills and athleticism against the top stars of the NBA. Later that year, he embarked on a new chapter of his basketball career, playing at the collegiate level for a well-known and successful basketball program at Duke University. Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, earning him both ACC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. After his freshman year at Duke, Flagg declared for the 2025 NBA Draft, where he was projected to be the first overall pick.

Unsurprisingly, Cooper Flagg was drafted first overall by the Dallas Mavericks when he was only 18 years and 186 days old, becoming the second-youngest first overall pick–the first being LeBron James.

Before entering the professional league, Cooper Flagg had already made a name for himself, winning accolades that are very difficult to earn. People may predict that he will be the next LeBron James, but regardless of their opinions of him, it can almost unanimously be said that Cooper Flagg has a bright future ahead of him.
