The NBA has made a major move in its attempt to shape the future of basketball in America, as its Board of Governors unanimously agreed to explore an expansion team in both Las Vegas and Seattle. With all 30 owners agreeing on this move, it is official that the league is on its way to its potential first expansion in over two decades.
Behind closed doors, league sources say that an expansion is “inevitable,” not in terms of if it will happen but rather when it will happen. This is because the financial rewards are enormous, with projections showing that an expansion team could sell for anywhere from $7 billion to $10 billion due to the astronomical increases in NBA team valuations in recent years.
However, Commissioner Adam Silver pointed out that the shift is not only about tradition but also about opportunity. While Seattle, which once had been the popular Seattle SuperSonics, has always been considered the first choice for an NBA return after losing its team back in 2008, Las Vegas has quickly changed to become an emerging hub for sports, especially with the success of teams such as the Las Vegas Aces.
The NBA has now partnered with PJT Partners, who will act as strategic advisors to assist the process. They will look at evaluating the bids, as well as the economic impact, while deciding if the new teams can start playing as early as the 2028-29 season.
The ripple effects of such a move will undoubtedly trickle down much further than just two new teams. In fact, there has already been talk of a conference realignment to help maintain competitive balance within the league, with teams such as the Minnesota Timberwolves or Memphis Grizzlies possibly joining the Eastern Conference. Although, a big concern arises on the topic of player potential. There may not be enough NBA-level players in the current NBA, and adding two more teams doesn’t help that at all. ESPN article writers state that such team skill dilution is necessary to equalize current franchises in the NBA right now, so hopefully player potential won’t cause too much of a burden.
This expansion also represents a wider trend within sports in America, as leagues continue to take advantage of a growth market. Both Las Vegas and Seattle have proven themselves to be capable of sustaining a professional sports franchise, and this will undoubtedly further solidify the NBA’s position both nationally and worldwide.
If this expansion comes to fruition, it will mark a long time coming for the NBA, as it will be their first expansion since 2004. For Seattle, it will mean a new era of basketball within their city, and for Las Vegas, it will mean a further solidification of their place as a sports capital.
