Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving Day is finally almost here! First started in 1621, when English colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared a three-day feast in Plymouth, Thanksgiving evolved into a yearly tradition deeply ingrained in American history. This Thursday, families and friends will gather across the country to celebrate this holiday centered around gratitude and reflection. Celebration comes with many traditions, and Thanksgiving has some of the best!

The Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade

Starting strong, we have Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. In the streets of Manhattan, thousands gather to watch giant, inflated balloon characters like Snoopy, marching bands, dancers, etc. A great way to start the holiday!

Run a Turkey Trot

A “turkey trot” is a fun race held on early Thanksgiving morning, inspired by the turkey, the holiday’s symbol. People of all ages participate in running 5Ks to half-marathons, a fun way to stay active before a big Thanksgiving feast.

Breaking the Wishbone

Although it’s not as well-known, many families save the wishbone of the turkey after it is carved. Two people pull on each side of the bone, breaking it, and whoever ends up with the larger piece is said to receive good luck or have their wish granted.

Watch Football

Football is a major part of Thanksgiving. The idea of the games being played on Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1876, when the game was recently invented. Many people watch NFL games on TV, while others play their own friendly game of football before or after dinner.

Black Friday

The day following Thanksgiving is known as “Black Friday”, one of the largest shopping days of the year. Stores across the country offer major discounts, even causing people to camp out in front of stores hours before they open. Many of the purchases are now online, but it’s still a great way to begin your Christmas shopping!

Share What You Are Thankful For

A meaningful Thanksgiving tradition is going around the table and sharing what each person is thankful for. It helps you know each other better and reminds people of the true meaning of this Holiday.

Eat a Thanksgiving Dinner

Thanksgiving is never celebrated without its centerpiece–a traditional Thanksgiving dinner! Most families enjoy classic dishes like roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie, all great ways to come together by sharing family recipes and filling your stomach, too. Definitely my favorite tradition.
