V.J. Edgecombe’s 34 points in his first NBA game was more than a spectacular debut; it was a statement that the 76ers’ future is now. With such a groundbreaking performance he of course broke many important records, including most points by a 76ers rookie in a debut game, most points in the first quarter of an NBA game (previously held by LeBron), and third-most points in an NBA rookie debut–behind Wilt Chamberlain (43) and Frank Selvy (35).
Valdez “V.J.” Edgecombe Jr. was raised in modest circumstances after being born on the tiny Bahamian island of Bimini, where his family relied on a generator to power their lights for years because electricity wasn’t always guaranteed. His passion, his means of escape, and ultimately his pass to the major leagues was basketball. In ninth grade, he relocated to the United States and attended Victory International Institute in Florida and Long Island Lutheran in New York for his high school education. College scouts noticed something unique about him despite his upbringing: his athleticism, motor skills, and a maturity uncommon for his age.
Edgecombe brought his skills to Baylor University, where he had an instant impact as a freshman. Over 33 games, he averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals. In addition to setting a freshman record at Baylor with 68 steals, he was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and selected to the Second Team All-Big 12. His agile ability to finish at the rim and his high basketball IQ were all praised by scouts.
After narrowly keeping their unprotected pick, The Philadelphia 76ers made their move in the 2025 NBA Draft, choosing Edgecombe third overall. Fans eagerly anticipated whether he would live up to the hype after the organization referred to him as a cornerstone for their rebuild.
He didn’t just live up to expectations, however. He exploded. Edgecombe scored 34 points on 13-of-26 shooting in his NBA debut. He also contributed 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and even a steal. That performance was the third-highest point total in an NBA debut ever and broke the 76ers’ rookie debut record, which was previously held by Allen Iverson. Also, as addressed previously, he even surpassed LeBron James’ rookie opening period total of 14 points in the first quarter.
But V.J.’s poise is more important than the points. Edgecombe “plays beyond his years,” according to coach Nick Nurse in a recent 2025 post-game interview, who praised his ability to make decisions under duress. Edgecombe, who has always been modest, was quick to admit how bizarre it all felt: “I prayed for this.”
Edgecombe hasn’t forgotten his roots despite the NBA’s bright lights and hectic energy. His journey from living on a generator-dependent island to setting records on the court serves as a reminder that tenacity really does pay off. Not only does his arrival represent a promising rookie, he represents the beginning of a comeback era for the Philadelphia 76ers.
