You might be wondering, “If sports betting is legal in the majority of US states, why can people still be arrested for it?” Most of the time, these crimes involve behind-the-scenes dealings and insider information. The recent events on October 23, 2025, are a prime example of the consequences of illegal sports betting.
On that day, NBA fans were stunned by the arrests of some notable names in basketball, such as Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and assistant coach Damon Jones. Authorities announced that their arrests were associated with extensive sports betting schemes and fraudulent poker games under the influence of the Mafia.
It was believed that these NBA figures were a part of a whopping 34 people who were arrested for their involvement in a gambling scheme involving multiple years, events throughout 11 states, and an unfathomable amount of money.
Along with Rozier and Jones, who stand accused of insider betting, or gathering insider information to gain an unfair betting advantage, four of their friends were also arrested. Specifically, the group used undisclosed data regarding injuries and starting lineups to make illegal bets, laundering their winnings multiple times from December 2022 to March 2024.
Similarly, Billups and more than two dozen people were charged in an illegal poker scheme, mainly acting as “face cards,” well-known former athletes who pull others to take part in illegal poker games; subsequently, poker players were scammed out of millions of dollars due to high-tech technology that put them at a disadvantage.
This incident isn’t illegal gambling’s first occurrence in NBA history. In 2024, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter was banned for life from the NBA for manipulating his own game performances in order to place bets on himself. These past scandals weren’t just limited to players but may have involved referees as well.
Nevertheless, much information regarding this most recent scandalous event has yet to be discovered. Authorities are continuously carrying out widespread investigations to uncover more details involving this scandal that has been unnoticed for years until recently. The arrests of Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier, and Damon Jones are just the beginning of this story. Who knows whether more NBA players are involved? Perhaps authorities will catch them, or they will simply go undetected, never to be caught.
