Now that the freshmen have taken their first midterms, we asked a couple how they’ve settled into The Charter School of Wilmington so far. Krithik Chirumammilla and Sri Vayuvegula, Class of 2030, offered their insight into starting high school.
“What’s been the biggest difference between middle school and high school so far?”
Both students highlighted the shift in academic expectations as a major challenge, agreeing that course rigor has been the biggest adjustment: Krithik pointed out “the increase in course rigor and classwork” and the changes he had to make to balance a greater workload.. From Sri’s point of view, his current course rigor represents a major difference from middle school: “in Middle school I didn’t have a lot to do, but high school is more competitive and has more work.”
What’s been the most challenging part of your schoolwork so far? Are you involved in any extracurriculars? If so, how has that experience been?
In addition, Krithik is deeply involved in extracurriculars like BPA (Business Professionals of America)–also shaping his experience as a freshmen. He talks about the consequent difficulties he faced after middle school regarding extracurriculars, quoting: “My extracurricular is BPA, where I plan to do more extracurriculars next year. My coursework is much harder and so is my BPA events. High school is definitely more competitive than middle school.”
What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting high school?
Looking back, both Sri and Kritihik conveyed one thing in particular they wished they knew earlier: locking in. Sri states, “Most importantly, lock in.” He also conveys that, “Things are not easy, and everything is getting better.” Similarly, through Krithik’s point of view: “Before starting highschool, definitely lock in at the start because of the immense courseload and not being used to it.”
What advice would you give to incoming freshmen next year?
Building onto the previous question, both students were asked about what advice they would give. Very similar to their preceding answer, both of them severely emphasize locking in. Furthermore, instead of the cliche ‘be prepared’, Sri gave more insight on what to accomplish once reaching high school, stating “lock in, and get involved with as much as you can. Join clubs, communities, volunteer.” Krithik, in his point of view, specifically mentioned the importance of not ignoring homework: “Lock in since the first day you get here. Don’t ignore homework, as it’s a big part of your grade.”
Describe your freshman year so far in three words.
Summing everything up, Sri was asked to describe their freshmen year so far in three simple words: “Hard, fun, and tiring.”
