Movies in 2026

With so many big releases already announced, 2026 is looking like a huge year for movies. From sequels fans have been waiting years for to classic adaptations, the 2026 lineup is full of variety. Whether it’s action, romance, animation, or darker films, there’s something coming out this year for just about everyone.

  1. Starting off the year strong, 28 Years Later: Bone Temple came out on January 16, set decades after Cillian Murphy’s original 2002 horror film. This movie is set in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors try to survive the world ravaged by a deadly virus. Survivors don’t just fight the infected but also grapple with a dangerous cult. The film highlights how far people will go for survival and how fear shapes human behavior. As one of the first major releases of 2026 it sets the stage for a year of compelling onscreen stories.
  1. Another movie that has already hit theaters this past Valentine’s weekend is Wuthering Heights, an adaptation of the 1847 novel by Emily Brontë. Unlike the typical romance films we usually see around this time of year, Wuthering Heights focused on the darker side of love, exploring how obsession, pride, and social class can shape not just relationships but generations. So, for those who aren’t fans of cheesy romances, this dark period drama might just be for you.
  1. This upcoming March, the highly anticipated movie The Bride, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal and inspired by the classic Bride of Frankenstein’s character the film reimagines the original story with a twist, rather than solely focusing on the horror aspect. The Bride explores themes like identity, independence and what it means to be created and controlled. With the emotional storytelling and classic gothic elements the movie stands out from typical cookie cutter horror movies and shows how classic stories can still be relevant in modern society.
  1. Another exciting release this coming April is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, expected to hit the theaters April 1st. While it’s not the very first animated film of the year, it’s one of the first major releases especially from a franchise that has a huge name recognition due to the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie. With its distinct animation and familiar characters’ newest adventure in space, it’s definitely a movie that a wider audience can watch.
  1. May will also be a huge month for movie fans with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film marks the return of the Star Wars franchise for the first time since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, making it a huge deal for Star Wars fans. Continuing the story from the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, the movie follows Din Djarin and Grogu as they take their adventures from the small screen to the big screen. With a massive fanbase and years of anticipation, this release could be a defining moment for the franchise.
  1. Kicking off the summer movie season in June is Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow, one of DC’s most anticipated superhero releases. The film introduces a new version of the well-loved Supergirl and is expected to show a more serious and vulnerable side to the girl of steel compared to past portrayals. Since DC is rebuilding its cinematic universe, it’s safe to say fans will be watching closely to see how this movie sets the tone for future films. With a fresh start to the franchise Supergirl could end up being one of the biggest movies of the summer.
  1. Spiderman, the next chapter for Marvel’s fan favorite franchise is swinging into theaters in late July After the sad ending of No way home, it’ll be interesting to see how Peter Parker adjusts to a world where no one remembers who he is. The title Brand New Day suggests a fresh new start for Peter Parker possibly focusing on his personal struggles and character development rather than the usual chaotic evil villains attacking storyline. With such a huge fan base and such high expectations, Brand New Day has potential to become one of the biggest superhero movies of the year.
  1. Horror fanatics seem to be winning this year with multiple movies in the genre being released especially with the upcoming release of Insidious: Chapter 6, the next movie in the Insidious series. The franchise is notorious for its supernatural storyline and its chilling atmosphere, especially with the idea of “The Further.” Even though much of the plot hasn’t been revealed the prequels have set the bar for plenty of suspense and bone chilling moments.
  2. Keeping the horror momentum going, September will lead off the release of Resident Evil, a reboot of the popular horror franchise based on the video games. Set to release September 18, the film is hinted to take a much darker turn compared to the earlier movies. Instead of just focusing on the action aspect this version aims to lean more into suspense and survival, following a new cast of characters dealing with a dangerous outbreak and the chaos that follows. This movie could revive the series and attract new and longtime fans.
  1.  Jumping back to the animation genre: in October The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is set to release, a continuation of the story from the OG we all know and love Avatar: The Last Airbender the movie is set after the events of the show and is expected to follow Aang and his friends as they face a new threat. For many people, myself included, grew up with this series and it brings a lot of nostalgia, setting the expectations very high while also expanding a well known story to something new making this a widely anticipated release from adults to children.
  1. For November we jump back into action movies with the release of Sunrise on the Reaping, a prequel to the popular Hunger Games series, focusing on the 50th Hunger Game (second quarter quell) 24 years before the more familiar character Katniss Everdeen’s story. The story follows 15 year old Haymith Abernathy as he survives the brutality of the double tribute arena, Capitol propaganda and the fight against political control giving us more insight to the stone cold mentor we see in the series. The novel for Sunrise on the Reaping was released in March 2025, and the movie is set to release this November, making it a much faster turnaround than previous installments in the franchise and help keeping the fan momentum going from the prior release of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
  1. Bringing us to the end of the 2026 season in December, we have the release of Marvel Studios Avengers:Doomsday featuring the return of many familiar characters like the Wakandans, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, X-Men all in a fight against Doctor Doom. While the plot is said to be TBA many plot leaks have given a picture of what could go down in the movie, it is said that it is likely that the movie involves Dr Doom manipulating multiversal incursions to rebuild the multiverse under his control which could possibly lead to an edge of the seat cliffhanger setting the plot up for Avengers: Secret Wars a 2027 movie release, though this is speculation and theories from leaks its definitely exciting to see what’s planned for the next two movies of the loved Avengers storyline.
