Since 2000, the Charter School of Wilmington Science Olympiad team has consistently swept the competition and has yet to be dethroned as the reigning state champion — and 2023 was no different.
On March 4, the team competed in the Delaware Science Olympiad State Tournament at Delaware State University against thirty-two other schools. Charter’s A Team placed first, with B Team following close behind placing second.
Science Olympiad is a team competition where teams of up to fifteen students compete in twenty-three individual events spanning chemistry, earth science, physics, and biology, as well as engineering and technology. For each event, event placement corresponds to team points, and the sum of the points equals the team score, which determines team placement. This year, A Team and B Team podiumed with scores of 156 and 218 respectively. Notable individual event placements include first place finishes in:
- Cell Biology
- Environmental Chemistry
- Forestry
- Rocks and Minerals
- Trajectory
- Agricultural Science.
Earlier in the year, the team competed in the University of Pennsylvania Science Olympiad Invitational.
Having qualified for the 2023 National Tournament, the team will compete at Wichita State University on May 19 – 20. Best of luck to our Science Olympians!
