The Charter School of Wilmington’s wrestling teams delivered impressive performances at the recent Delmar Wrestling Invitational (boys) and Milford Wrestling Tournament (girls). The events showcased the skill, determination, and rapid growth of Charter’s wrestling program, including a notable rise in girls’ wrestling participation.
At the Delmar Wrestling Invitational, the boys’ team demonstrated their prowess against tough competition. Leading the charge were Lawson Josefyk (175 lbs.) and Chris Johnson (215 lbs.), both earning second place finishes after battling their way to the finals. Ryan Smith (120 lbs.) clinched fourth place, with Roman Cimorosi (165 lbs.) also securing a fourth-place medal in his weight class. Kaden Price (132 lbs.) finished sixth, and Aidan Ulichney (126 lbs.) rounded out the team’s strong showing with a seventh-place finish.
Meanwhile, the girls’ wrestling team made waves at the Milford Wrestling Tournament. Bella Kim and Sophie Boone each fought their way to third-place podium finishes, continuing to prove the potential of Charter’s emerging girls’ program.
The successes come at a time of transformation for Charter’s wrestling program, particularly on the girls’ side. Until recently, girls’ wrestling at Charter was nonexistent. However, in just a short time, the program has grown from zero participants to five active wrestlers, a remarkable achievement reflecting the increasing popularity of the sport among female athletes.
The team’s progress so far reflects the hard work of the athletes, but the coaching staff emphasized that sustained success will require continued commitment. “We’ve made some strides, but we’re not where we want to be yet,” said Ryan Smith. “These tournaments are a reminder of the work we still need to do to compete consistently at the highest level.”
As the season progresses, Charter’s wrestlers are focusing on refining their techniques and building mental toughness. With a mix of promising results and clear opportunities for improvement, both the boys’ and girls’ teams are determined to make the most of the weeks ahead.
There’s no shortage of potential within the program, but unlocking it will demand focus and effort from every athlete on the mat. For Charter’s wrestlers, the journey is far from over.
