NBA Pre-Season Rankings

The NBA offseason has been full of twists and turn. From Ben Simmons to the Clippers scandal and the uncertainty surrounding LeBron’s next chapter, this offseason has delivered plenty of blockbuster trades, questionable decisions, and out-of-left-field surprises. These rankings go beyond just short-term moves, looking instead at how each team’s decisions could shape the future of the league. Here’s how every team stacks up after a wild offseason.

30. Sacramento Kings (15-67):

The Kings just haven’t made any significant trades to better their record from last season. They lost a few veterans in Russell Westbrook, who retired and waiving DeMar DeRozan. Sacramento also traded the young Devin Carter to the Atlanta Hawks for a few draft picks. It is looking like their front office is seeking the first pick in the draft and a player pool of incredible athletes.  Some bright spots on this roster are De’Andre Hunter, who was acquired in February via a trade for James Harden. They also have experienced and talented veterans in Domantas Sabonis and Zach Lavine.  I just don’t see them being competitive for a playoff spot in a season filled with stacked teams, they are a team that is in their tanking/rebuilding phase

29.   Los Angeles Clippers (20-62):

The Clippers are entering a whole new chapter following a massive offseason shakeup. They officially moved on from the Kawhi Leonard era following their massive fines and loss of draft picks in future seasons by trading him to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram and Gradey Dick. On top of losing veteran depth with Nicholas Batum retiring, they restructured their entire core. They have rising offensive talents in Darius Garland leading the point, Brandon Ingram who has been playing some great basketball and new draft pick Keaton Wagler. However, their frontcourt is a massive question mark with an aging Brook Lopez. In a very competitive year and a terrible future, I think the drop for the Clippers starts this year.

28.  New Orleans Pelicans (22-60):

The Pelicans are heading this season stuck in a bit of mess, not quite tearing it all down but nowhere near contending in a ruthless Western Conference. Moving on to late summer additions like Benedict Mathurin and AJ Johnson shows that they are signaling to build for the future around their younger players. New Orleans still has amazing talent in Zion Williamson, and key players like Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy II and Herbert Jones. However, constant injury problems and defensive inconsistency with their star players can make a record under 25 wins a reality. Expect them to spend the majority of the season testing out different combinations and rotations and putting themselves in position for a top pick in the 2027 NBA Draft.

27.  Memphis Grizzlies (23-59):

The Grizzlies are fully embracing a rebuild from ground up after a massive franchise reset saw Ja Morant traded to Portland and Jaren Jackson Jr. moving to Utah. Memphis has stripped down its old roster to build a brand new team centered around Cameron Boozer, their 1st round pick out of Duke. While veteran acquisitions like Jerami Grant and Isaiah Stewart provide some talent temporarily, this roster is largely filled with young and unproven players like GG Jackson II, rookie Karim Lopez, and 7 foot 3 monster Zach Edey. The long term goal for the Grizzlies is to build a championship contending team in the future completely built around Cameron Boozer while hunting for another young player in next season’s draft.

26.  Brooklyn Nets (24-58):

The Nets are continuing down a long term developmental path after reshaping the starpower in their roster. Trading Nic Claxton to the Timberwolves to acquire veteran Julius Randle gives Brooklyn an established frontcourt presence alongside Michael Porter Jr. and Moritz Wagner, but the big picture revolves around the future. This future is being built by lottery pick Mikel Brown Jr., international talents like Egor Demin and Nalon Traore, and rookie forward Joshua Jefferson. Brooklyn’s priority this season once again is to get a high draft pick.

25. Utah Jazz (26-56):

The Jazz are stuck in the middle of a tough Western Conference. Trading away big man Walker Kessler for draft picks shows the front office is still building for the future instead of trying to win right now. Their team is led by rising stars like rookie draft pick Darryn Peterson and young guards Keyonte George and Isaiah Collier. The start on the team is still Finnish man Lauri Maurkananen and players like Jusuf Nurkic and Jaren Jackson Jr. provide a strong defensive presence. The Jazz are also ultimately trying to play for the future and secure a high draft pick.

24. Phoenix Suns (32-50):

The Suns are in for a rough reality check after shaking up their roster. Mainly dominated by veteran Devin Bookers and young players Jalen Green and Trey Johnson. Picking up Luke Kennard and drafting Koa Peat will turn out to be a huge success for them. A strong defensive backcourt led by big man Khaman Maluach and Mark Williams will be scary. However, the Suns are in their rebuilding phase after coming so close in 2022, looking to develop their guys and get ready for the draft.

23. Charlotte Hornets (34-48):

The Hornets are trying to find a new identity after moving on from LaMelo Ball and shaking up their core. Bringing in veteran presence like Naz Reid, Grayson Allen, and Dennis Schröder gives them solid pieces to work with, but this team is really going to be driven by young stars in Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel. They might not be ready to challenge the top tier of the East just yet, but they have enough talent to stay competitive on most nights. Expect them to fight hard for a spot in the mix while letting their young core get valuable minutes.

22. Washington Wizards (35-47):

The Wizards are one of the most interesting young teams to watch this season after landing the top pick in the draft, AJ Dybantsa. Adding Dybantsa alongside young talents like Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington gives Washington a super bright future. At the same time, bringing in experienced pros like Anthony Davis, Trae Young and Deandre Ayton means the young guys will have plenty of leadership on and off the court. They are still a few pieces away from being true contenders, but the Wizards have drastically from years before.

21. Chicago Bulls (38-44):

The Bulls are putting out a strong and hard working roster that combines emerging talent with long time veterans. With Josh Giddey running the show and young forward Matas Buzelis taking the next step in his development, Chicago has plenty of playmaking on the floor. The front office also added proven talents like Norman Powell and center Nic Claxton to shore up the rotation. With UNC star Caleb Wilson as their star rookie, they might find themselves right on the edge of the Eastern Conference playoff picture, battling for a spot while figuring out which of their young players will be part of the long-term rebuild.

20. Milwaukee Bucks (40-42):

Milwaukee is transitioning into a new era after shaking up its roster by trading Giannis and adding dynamic playmakers like Tyler Herro and young rookies like Kasparas Jakucionis. In the long run this team will be amazing but at most the Bucks are a play in team struggling to find who their next star is after the departure of the Greek Freak.

19. Orlando Magic (41-41):

The Magic are stuck in the middle of the pack after finishing last season at 45-37 and getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the third year in a row. To fix their stagnant offense, the front office fired head coach Jamahl Mosley and hired Sean Sweeney to bring in a faster, better-spaced playing style. While they kept their main stars like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, their only major offseason moves were adding veteran Nikola Vučević and re-signing key defenders to cheap, one-year deals.

18. Dallas Mavericks (42-40):

The Mavericks will show a huge improvement from the year before with rising superstar and new face of the franchise, Cooper Flagg and new head coach and national champion Dusty May. Drafting Morez Johnson Jr. and picking up Santi Aldama will give Dallas a lot of options, the youth on this team can make them a threat in the future. With Kyrie Irving returning, a lot of offensive doubts will be erased, causing the Mavericks to get closer to the playoffs for the first time since the Luka Doncic era.

17. Boston Celtics (44-38):

The Celtics take a surprising step back after a massive blockbuster trade that redefined their identity. Management completely shifted gears by trading away star wing Jaylen Brown to the 76ers in exchange for veteran forward Paul George and incoming draft picks in a very controversial deal following Jaylen Browns incredible season. With Jaylen Brown being the only real superstar on the team it will be hard for him and the Celtics to do good without his partner in crime.

16. Portland Trailblazers (44-38):

The Blazers are in pretty good shape following the Ja Morant trade. With the addition of a new superstar to their depth and Damian Lillard returning, their shooting will be incredible. Their young core led by Deni Advija, Toumani Camara, and Shaedon Sharpe give them a great future to look forward to.

15. Cleveland Cavaliers (44-38):

The Cavaliers are looking to stay competitive in the East with Donovan Mitchell leading the way alongside James Harden and Evan Mobley. However, questions about their roster depth and ability to stay healthy could hold them back from making a deep playoff run. Cleveland has the talent to compete, but they need more consistency to move up the rankings

14. Indiana Pacers (45-37):

The Pacers are hoping to bounce back and return to playoff contention with Tyrese Haliburton back from his ACL tear, leading their offense. Their success will depend on how quickly their roster can regain its chemistry and whether their young players and talented veterans like Pascal Siakam can step up. If Indiana stays healthy, it could become a dangerous team in the Eastern Conference.

13. Atlanta Hawks (45-37):

The Hawks are starting a new chapter after adding defensive specialist Luguentz Dort and scorer Aaron Wiggins while keeping key players like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels. With rookie Kingston Flemings joining the roster, Atlanta has a promising mix of youth and athleticism, but losing Zaccharie Risacher and Jonathan Kuminga leaves questions about their scoring depth.

12. Houston Rockets (46-36):

The Rockets are looking to take the next step with Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, and Jabari Smith Jr. leading the roster. Adding Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic gives Houston more experience and playmaking, making it a dangerous playoff team if its stars stay healthy.

11. Golden State Warriors (46-36):

The Warriors are relying on Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green to lead another playoff push, with Kristaps Porzingis adding size and scoring. Their veteran experience remains a major strength including their draft pick Yaxel Lendebourg, who will provide a much needed young star for the future, but their health and depth will determine whether they can compete with the Western Conference’s best teams.

10.  Miami Heat (47-35):

The Heat made a major statement by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, giving Bam Adebayo an elite superstar to build around. With Giannis bringing dominant inside scoring and defense, Miami has the potential to become one of the East’s top teams if the new roster develops strong chemistry.

9. Toronto Raptors (49-33):

The Raptors made one of the offseason’s biggest moves by bringing Kawhi Leonard back from the Clippers. Pairing Leonard with Scottie Barnes  and RJ Barrett gives Toronto an experienced and versatile core that could compete for a deep playoff run if everyone stays healthy.

8. Minnesota Timberwolves (49-33):

The Timberwolves made a major change by acquiring LaMelo Ball from Charlotte, adding an explosive playmaker alongside Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert. However, trading away Julius Randle and Naz Reid creates questions about their frontcourt depth, so their success will depend on how well their new lineup fits together.

7. Denver Nuggets (53-29):

The Nuggets remain serious contenders with Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon leading the way, while DeMar DeRozan adds another experienced scorer. Jokić’s elite playmaking makes Denver dangerous against any opponent, but the team’s defensive consistency and bench production will determine how far it goes.

6. Los Angeles Lakers (53-29):

The Lakers continue to build around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves providing another reliable offensive option after closing the book on LeBron James. Their star power makes them dangerous in the playoffs, but defensive consistency and the ability to stay healthy will determine whether they can reach the NBA Finals.

5. San Antonio Spurs (53-29):

The Spurs are becoming championship contenders with Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle leading a talented roster following their NBA Finals loss. Rising star Dylan Harper adds even more potential to the backcourt, while Wembanyama’s elite defense gives San Antonio a major advantage against opposing offenses, but DeAaron Fox’s inconsistency could be a major problem. With a motive to take revenge from last year’s loss, the Spurs are hungrier than ever.

4. Detroit Pistons (55-27):

The Pistons are building on their success with Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Ausar Thompson leading a young, physical roster. Adding Isaiah Joe gives Detroit another shooting threat, and its defensive identity could make it one of the toughest teams to beat in the East.

3. Philadelphia 76ers (57-25):

The 76ers made a blockbuster move by acquiring Jaylen Brown and LeBron James to join Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Their sophomore sensation VJ Edgecombe gives an athletic and young guard.  This star-studded and loaded roster has championship potential, but balancing the ball between its top scorers and keeping Embiid healthy will be crucial to their success.

2. Oklahoma City Thunder (60-22):

The Thunder remain one of the league’s strongest teams, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren. Although they traded Luguentz Dort and Aaron Wiggins to Atlanta, their young core and championship experience give them the tools to challenge for another title.

1. New York Knicks (61-21):

The Knicks are aiming to defend their championship behind Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges. Although losing Mitchell Robinson weakens their frontcourt depth, their established chemistry and offensive talent make them a strong choice to finish first in the regular season.
