As we look back on 2025, we recognize a year defined by cutting-edge technological innovation that will continue to affect our world in impactful ways. This year has been especially strong in the field of artificial intelligence, which continues to become more powerful by the passing day.
This AI innovation helps people save lots of valuable time. For example, engineers can let AI test or analyze their ideas or solutions for them instead of having to do it themselves. This saves time and allows them to explore other potential solutions instead of having to do the heavy work. They can also help people save time by summarizing and analyzing long documents. Additionally, lawyers who need to read lots of legal documents and emails on a regular basis can let the AI analyze them in a very short time. AI didn’t completely remove effort; it only changed where human effort matters the most.
This year’s improvements in AI have also given it better reasoning abilities. At the annual Math Olympiad, AI models such as Google DeepMind and ChatGPT achieved a gold medal score of 35 out of the 42 possible points. This is especially impressive since only 10% of the human contestants earned gold. Because of the amount of repetitive training one needs in preparation for a math competition, the result suggests that mechanical memorization and rote learning will decrease in importance for the future. This would mean that humans will need to have greater creativity and deeper understanding in the field they are in. This deeper understanding is necessary as AI makes the simple tasks redundant.
Humans’ priorities shift once AI takes over the tedious tasks. Now, people have more time to focus on creating new ideas, leading to faster technological developments for the future. Looking back at the first industrial revolution, the steam engine was able to power factories and solved the problem of a human’s physical limitation. In a similar way, modern AI mitigates the cognitive limitations of a human, allowing people to direct their focus towards other things.
Looking into the future, AI’s new power would also create a larger economic gap between people. People who know how to use AI would have greater economic opportunities and benefits since artificial intelligence can aid people in many different ways. Those who own AI infrastructures would also have a greater potential to earn money from AI’s increasing prevalence. As a result, there will likely be more distance between people who know and don’t know how to use AI.
The introduction of more powerful AI means that schools will need to rethink education. Simply blocking new technology such as artificial intelligence in schools can harm a student’s future. As AI’s abilities continue to grow, it is important to learn how to use AI efficiently. It is necessary for students to learn how to use it effectively rather than relying on AI for quick and shallow answers.
While the year saw a lot of improvements in AI, the question of “what comes next?” has yet to be fully answered.
