Many students juggle a sport while maintaining schoolwork, and many more parents may not like the idea; a plethora would say it is highly distracting from schoolwork.
However, sports have many benefits that homework or school projects could never provide anyone. These benefits land both within a person’s mental and physical health, but when someone’s mental and physical health is better, it is scientifically proven that they will academically do better as well.
Most sports teams practice somewhere near 4 times per week while in high-school, which accounts for a total of typically 6 hours, not to mention a weekly game, ending at around 7-8 hours each week. When you look at it this way, you might be even more inclined to dislike the idea of starting a sport, however the benefits far exceed the time spent. With 7-8 hours of each week would be dedicated to a sports team, individuals on school teams exercise substantially more than any average person. This results in a strengthened heart, lungs, bones, muscles, and even brain. Of course, it doesn’t stop there; there are also benefits for your long-term health which include prevention of certain cancers, risks of cardiovascular diseases, along with a list full of other diseases and illnesses which have a reduced chance of occurring. Overall, there is a higher chance that you will lead a longer and generally happier life
After discussing physical health benefits, it’s important to bring attention to the mental health aspect of playing sports as a student. While playing a sport that you enjoy, your body will release endorphins, which are chemicals within your brain that releases pain and stress. Endorphins are also mood lifters which will evidently cause you to be much happier while also leaving you feeling much more relaxed and even optimistic. Thanks to the release of these chemicals, sports players also have lower levels of anxiety and depression.
It’s safe to say that once practice is over, for whichever sport you play, you will be left much happier and healthier, even if it takes up a little bit of your academic time. Overall, it should be evident that sports are a healthy way to maintain your physical health while keeping yourself happy!
