Herein you lie, a dying child
dressed in blue pajamas. As if
second nature, I pass on to you
a creamy tomato broth
decorated with one mint leaf.
All home-grown.
It is the thirtieth
meal I’ve crafted for you
since the sickness started
and despite my best
wishes, as I return
to our garden, I think:
God, why
has this become just
another January day?
